America Gets the Bigger Tesla Model Y - With a Third Row That Actually Fits Adults

Tesla is finally bringing its stretched Model Y to the United States, and the big news isn’t just the extra legroom. The Chinese market has enjoyed this longer, three-row version for months, but now American buyers can get their hands on a Model Y that seats up to seven—and Tesla says the third row is designed for full-sized humans, not just kids or cargo.

The so-called Model Y L adds about two inches of length compared to the standard version, most of it behind the rear axle. That extra space allows for a proper third row that Tesla claims can accommodate passengers up to 6 feet tall without turning the trip into a punishment. Early reports from China suggest the third row is tight but usable for shorter trips, which is more than most compact SUVs can say.

S. market, but expect a premium over the standard Model Y’s starting price. Deliveries are slated to begin later this year, with production likely at Tesla’s Texas and Fremont plants. If you’ve been squeezing your family into a five-seater, this might be the upgrade you’ve been waiting for—just don’t expect limousine-level space in that back row.
