After Fisker’s Collapse, a $1,000 Gadget Brings Hands-Free Driving to the Stranded Ocean SUV

Fisker may have gone belly-up before it could deliver the hands-free driving feature it promised for the Ocean SUV. But one aftermarket company is stepping in to finish the job for about a grand. Comma AI, a shop known for retrofitting assisted-driving gear into existing cars, think dashcam or aftermarket touchscreen, announced on X that it has added the Fisker Ocean to its compatible vehicles.

A video posted alongside the announcement shows a Comma-powered Ocean steering itself down quiet streets, with the driver adjusting speed using the car’s original steering wheel controls.

The clip comes from San Jose engineer Majd Srour, a well-known figure in the Ocean owner community. With Comma AI’s hardware hooked up, his SUV handles lane keeping and adaptive cruise control, and it can reportedly drive for hours without intervention, though the driver must stay alert and ready to take over at any moment.

That’s a lifeline for Ocean owners, who were left stranded after Fisker Inc. filed for bankruptcy in 2024. The startup, founded by designer Henrik Fisker in 2016, folded without delivering promised software updates or aftersales support. Most Oceans now serve as New York City taxis, with a handful of independent shops and owner groups keeping them on the road.

Comma AI’s system, called the Comma Four, runs its own cameras and sensors, it doesn’t tap into the Ocean’s built-in hardware. The software is open source and currently compatible with more than 325 car models, from a 2016 Honda Civic to a 2023 Ford F-150. It normally sells for $999, but as of this writing, it’s on sale for $899 as part of an Independence Day deal.

New vehicles are added with each software release, and the company notes that if you own a modern car and have some programming chops, you can likely add support yourself, which is exactly the path Srour took.
