Acura Integra Type S Takes the Win Over VW Golf R in Manual vs. Auto Showdown

Acura Integra Type S Takes the Win Over VW Golf R in Manual vs. Auto Showdown

In a head-to-head comparison of two compact performance hatchbacks, the 2026 Acura Integra Type S emerged as the preferred choice over the 2026 Volkswagen Golf R, despite being slower in straight-line tests. The key differentiator: the Acura's six-speed manual transmission, which delivers a more engaging driving experience than the Golf's seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.

The Integra Type S, unchanged for 2026, starts at $55,195 and came in at $55,795 with optional paint. The Golf R, offered in a single trim with options like the Euro Style package ($3,795) and Graphite Gray paint ($455), totaled $54,980 as tested. 0-liter four-cylinders, with the Acura producing 320 horsepower and the VW making 328.

Performance numbers favored the Golf R: it hit 60 mph in 4.0 seconds versus 5.1 for the Acura, and finished the quarter-mile in 12.5 seconds at 111 mph compared to 13.8 seconds at 104 mph. Braking and skidpad results were nearly identical, with both posting 0.99 g on the pad.

On the road, the Integra's manual shines with short, crisp throws and a satisfying exhaust note in Sport modes. The Golf's dual-clutch is quick but lurches at low speeds. The Acura offers more rear legroom and physical climate controls, while the VW relies heavily on touch-sensitive buttons that can frustrate.

The Golf counters with more rear headroom and standard three-zone climate control.

The Integra's styling draws praise for its upmarket look, while the Golf is more understated. Ultimately, the Acura's engaging manual, usable interior, and stylish design made it the winner, proving that speed isn't everything in a driver's car.
