Acura Finally Answers the Call for a Bigger SUV - Meet the XL

For years, Acura has watched competitors scoop up families who need a truly spacious three-row SUV. The MDX sells well, but its third row is tight, and buyers looking for real room have had to look elsewhere. That may change soon. According to a new report, Acura is developing a larger flagship SUV positioned above the MDX, and it’s being referred to internally as the Acura XL.

Production is reportedly set to begin in September 2029 at Honda’s plant in Lincoln, Alabama, with annual output potentially reaching 40,000 units.

The XL is expected to take direct aim at the Lexus TX, which has gained traction thanks to its usable third row and generous cargo space. Unlike many American competitors that rely on big-displacement engines, Acura is reportedly equipping the XL with a new hybrid powertrain designed for large vehicles, balancing premium performance with better efficiency.

Details on cylinder count and output are still under wraps, but the shift toward hybrids makes sense given Honda’s recent scaling back of EV plans and the healthy margins on big SUVs.

Dealers are already pushing for something more ambitious than a stretched crossover. One unnamed Acura retailer told Autonews he hopes the XL is a “full-fledged large SUV” built on a body-on-frame platform or extended wheelbase, capable of taking on the Chevrolet Tahoe. Ford Expedition, and Cadillac Escalade.

“It’s a missed opportunity if they don’t do it,” he said. The XL would also compete with luxury models like the Mercedes-Benz GLS and BMW X7, likely at a lower price point. Honda has declined to comment on the report. Here’s hoping they keep the name, it’s simple, and honestly, it fits.
