AA Proposes One-Hour Lesson to Let Auto-Only Drivers Use Manuals

AA Proposes One-Hour Lesson to Let Auto-Only Drivers Use Manuals

The UK’s AA is pushing for a rule change that would let drivers who passed their test in an automatic car legally drive a manual after just one supervised lesson. Currently, Brits who qualify in an automatic must retake the entire driving test in a stick-shift car before they’re allowed to drive one.

With a massive test backlog, some drivers wait months for that upgrade.

AA president Edmund King argues the current system is unfair, saying most automatic drivers quickly develop good road skills, so forcing them to repeat a full test just to borrow a manual is unnecessary. He suggests a one-hour conversion lesson with a qualified instructor, covering clutch control, gear changes, and hill starts, without adding more strain to an already overstretched testing system.

The British government is not convinced. A Department for Transport spokesperson told The Telegraph there are no plans to change the rules, and anyone wanting to drive a manual must still pass a manual test.

The UK’s approach is common across Europe, Australia, Japan, and China, where passing in an automatic restricts you to automatics unless you later qualify in a manual. North America is different: in the US and Canada, a standard license lets you drive either transmission, regardless of which car you used for your test.

The proposal raises a question: is a one-hour lesson enough, or should the full manual test remain mandatory? The AA sees it as a middle ground, teaching a valuable skill without repeating an entire exam for someone who’s already proven they can drive safely.
