A Swiss Shop Is Turning BMW Z4s Into One-of-a-Kind Roadsters

A small Swiss operation called Atelier Edo Popken is taking the BMW Z4 in a bold new direction. The company, under the name EDO Roadster, now offers fully custom builds where no two cars are exactly alike. ” The man behind it, Edo Popken, already has a resume that includes time as a brand ambassador for the BMW i8 and previous custom work on that platform, including the i8 Procar and the i8 Roadster RSL.
For this project, the Atelier handles design, paint, and interiors, while a sister company, Edo Motorsport, takes care of the mechanical upgrades.
The press materials detail more than 111 modified parts, including a reshaped front end, a new rear diffuser, and dual round exhaust tips that reportedly nod to the old BMW Z8. Two versions are planned. The Concorso keeps an 8-speed automatic and adds adaptive cruise control and heated seats, aimed at relaxed cruising.
The Ultraleggera swaps in a 6-speed manual and carbon-fiber bucket seats, with extra weight shaved off. Under the hood, Edo Motorsport claims over 400 horsepower, more than 440 lb-ft of torque, a 0-60 time under 4 seconds, and a top speed above 150 mph. They also say power-to-weight improves by 17% and 20% for the two versions, with upgraded brakes and chassis.
S. version reportedly under consideration, though no timeline is given. What’s missing from the announcement is just as interesting. There’s no pricing, no production numbers, and no delivery schedule. That’s common for this kind of boutique coachbuilder, where cost and lead time come down to a private conversation with the customer.
Popken frames the car as a “future classic,” built to age well rather than chase trends. Whether it earns that label is something the collector market will decide. For now, the base Z4 Roadster was already a favorite, and this take makes it even harder to ignore.
