A Speeding Ticket, an Impounded SUV, and a $2,500 Lesson for a Learner Driver

A Speeding Ticket, an Impounded SUV, and a $2,500 Lesson for a Learner Driver

A 20-year-old learner driver on British Columbia’s Coquihalla Highway learned the hard way that pushing the pedal to the metal comes with a steep price tag. On July 11, police caught her behind the wheel of her father’s 2026 Honda Pilot, clocking 104 mph (168 km/h) in a 75 mph (120 km/h) zone.

The result? The SUV was impounded for a week, and the young driver now faces a financial hit that goes far beyond the initial ticket.

According to the BC Highway Patrol, the incident went down south of Merritt. The driver, from Williams Lake, had five other people in the car. Under British Columbia’s learner’s license rules, she’s normally limited to one passenger, though immediate family members are an exception.

Police confirmed all five passengers were relatives and legally seated, but that didn’t stop Corporal Michael McLaughlin from issuing a stern warning: “Just because something is technically legal doesn’t mean it’s a good idea.

The ticket itself was C$368 ($267) for going 41 to 60 km/h over the limit. But the real sting came from the seven-day impound of her father’s Pilot, plus towing and storage fees. Add in at least three years of high-risk insurance premiums, and the total bill climbs to roughly C$2,500 ($1,815).

The father, as the registered owner, will likely have to cover the impound costs. The takeaway? Speeding doesn’t just cost you a fine, it can drain your wallet and ground your ride for a week.
