A Single Typo Forced Subaru to Recall Nearly 500,000 Vehicles

What started as a small oversight in a user manual has snowballed into one of the largest recalls in Subaru’s recent history. S. because of a misprint in the owner’s manual, specifically, the tire pressure label on the driver’s door jamb lists the wrong inflation numbers.

The error, first flagged by Subaru during an internal audit, affects popular models including the 2020-2022 Outback, Legacy, and Ascent. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the incorrect pressure values could lead to tires being under- or over-inflated, increasing the risk of a crash.

While no injuries or accidents have been linked to the mistake, Subaru is taking no chances.

Dealers will install corrected labels free of charge. Owners can expect notification letters starting in late April. For a company that prides itself on safety and reliability, this recall is an embarrassing, but necessary, reminder that even the smallest detail matters. If you own one of the affected models, check your door jamb and watch your mailbox.
