A Ferrari Shooting Brake With Hidden Gullwing Doors Turns Heads at Goodwood

A Dutch design firm that has quietly become one of the most respected coachbuilders of the modern era just unveiled its latest creation. Niels van Roij Design, known for turning high-end coupes into elegant shooting brakes and wagons, has revealed the Daytona Shooting Brake Hommage in time for the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

The car pays tribute to a rare 1970s Ferrari one-off, and it’s the only one of its kind.

The inspiration came from a 1972 Ferrari 365/4 Daytona coupe that was transformed into a shooting brake by an English coachbuilder. That original car had every body panel replaced and featured distinctive gullwing glass doors for access to the rear hatch. The new Hommage follows the same concept, starting with a Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano coupe.

It keeps the naturally aspirated V12 and rear-wheel drive, but swaps the original five-speed manual for a six-speed sequential unit. The result is 612 horsepower and 448 pound-feet of torque. Styling mirrors the old Daytona, with bulging rear fenders, an orange front accent wing, and taillights integrated into the rear glass surround.

The gullwing windows are back, too, complete with machined aluminum hinges. The entire body is made of lightweight aluminum, with only the doors left untouched from the donor car. Inside, the instrument cluster was moved to the center as a nod to the original, and the cargo area is lined with carbon fiber and aluminum slider bars.

Don’t expect to order one. This is a one-off project built for a specific client, and it took 15,000 hours from its initial announcement in March 2021 to completion. The company says it’s open to discussing other custom builds with serious collectors, but this particular car is not for sale.

The project underscores a booming market for high-end custom coachwork, with firms like Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera also unveiling new Ferraris. It’s a world away from the shrinking entry-level car segment, but for those who can afford it, the results speak for themselves.
