A 2022 BMW X5 Now Costs About the Same as a New Toyota RAV4 Hybrid

CarBuzz found that a four-year-old BMW X5 has fallen into new Toyota RAV4 Hybrid territory. On the CarBuzz Marketplace, the average 2022 BMW X5 sDrive40i sells for around $38,000, while nicer or lower-mileage examples can reach $45,000. That aligns with the upper RAV4 lineup, where the Woodland Hybrid starts at $39,900, the XSE Hybrid at $41,300, and the Limited AWD at $43,300.
Some lower-mileage or BMW-certified X5 examples are also listed from $40,000 to $44,000. The 2022 X5 xDrive40i originally stuckered at $62,900, a drop of roughly 40%.
The xDrive40i is the version to watch. 0-liter inline-six making 335 hp and 330 lb-ft of torque, an eight-speed automatic, all-wheel drive, and a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. EPA estimates are 21 mpg city, 25 mpg highway, and 23 mpg combined. The xDrive45e plug-in hybrid is also priced near $38,000, but the extra electric hardware makes it more complicated and worth checking carefully.
The V8-powered M50i averages around $46,000, which already sits above the RAV4 Limited and comes with higher fuel and parts costs.
The BMW brings a quiet, richly equipped cabin, with examples available with a heads-up display, heated and ventilated multi-contour seats, Harman Kardon audio, surround-view cameras, and adaptive cruise control. But the RAV4 wins on warranty: a three-year, 36,000-mile basic warranty; five-year, 60,000-mile powertrain coverage; eight-year, 100,000-mile hybrid component protection; and a ten-year, 150,000-mile hybrid battery warranty.
The 2022 X5 originally had four-year, 50,000-mile coverage and three years of scheduled maintenance, but by mid-2026 most examples are likely past those limits. Some may carry BMW Certified Pre-Owned coverage, but it is less comprehensive than the original warranty.
Running costs widen the gap. The 2022 X5 xDrive40i is rated at 23 mpg combined on premium, while the 2026 RAV4 Limited gets 41 mpg on regular. At 12,000 miles a year, the BMW would use roughly 522 gallons versus the Toyota's 293. RepairPal estimates average annual repair and maintenance at $1,166 for the X5 and $429 for the RAV4, with X5 brake pad replacement running $711 to $768.
The X5 can make sense for low-mileage drivers with a trusted BMW specialist and a maintenance budget. For most budget-conscious or high-mileage shoppers, the RAV4 remains the safer financial call.
