A 2003 E55 AMG That Won’t Sleep: One Owner’s Two-Year Battle with a Battery Drain

A 2003 E55 AMG That Won’t Sleep: One Owner’s Two-Year Battle with a Battery Drain

After two years of chasing electrical gremlins, a 2003 Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG owner with 228,000 miles on the clock is still fighting a battery that dies overnight. Despite pulling fuses for a faulty CD changer and passenger seat adjustment, the drain persists. The owner has tried three different multimeters to measure current draw after locking the car and waiting 20 minutes, but each reads zero when connected between the negative battery terminal and the negative cable, a sign the meters may not be sensitive enough to capture parasitic draw.

A digital clamp meter is on the way to get a real reading.

Diagnostics point to several potential culprits. The PTS (Parktronic) module, N62, sits in the passenger footwell, an area that’s seen water intrusion and damp carpet. Water damage to that module or its connector could keep it awake. Another suspect is the N93 control unit, which may also be failing to enter sleep mode.

The owner replaced a blown alarm horn with a used unit, but the car still doesn’t honk when locking or during an intrusion. The AWG (wake-up line) shows a short circuit on a 40-amp fuse, which could be the main power drain if that circuit stays active.

Experienced Mercedes owners suggest focusing on the door modules. A common issue on W211 models is that a collection of control units fails to go to sleep, with door modules often staying fully powered and waking each other up repeatedly. The owner has ordered a new passenger-side mirror and is considering a battery trickle charger as a temporary fix.

But the goal remains: find the root cause, stop the overnight drain, and finally enjoy this high-performance money pit on the road.
