A 2001 Mercedes E320 Wagon’s Limp-Mode Mystery: One Mechanic’s Diagnostic Journey

A 2001 Mercedes E320 Wagon’s Limp-Mode Mystery: One Mechanic’s Diagnostic Journey

When a 2001 Mercedes-Benz E320 4Matic wagon threw up the dreaded “ELEC. STABIL. PROG. ESP VISIT WORKSHOP” message and entered limp mode, one owner’s troubleshooting became a lesson in automotive detective work.

After initially replacing the throttle position sensor, MAP sensor, and nearby vacuum lines, the engine still refused to cooperate. The gas tank pressure sensor appeared fine, but its pigtail connector was missing a clip, allowing the harness to pop loose—only held in place by the plastic access cover.

A restart brought no smooth idle. Instead, the engine misfired, and the accelerator pedal produced zero response.

The P0410 code pointed to the secondary air injection system, but the owner suspected that wasn’t causing the limp mode. He then turned his attention to the hydraulic pump. Over recent months, the steering had grown heavy, and the fluid reservoir level fluctuated constantly. According to Mercedes-Benz technical forums, a failing hydraulic pump can trigger the ESP system to restrict engine power as a protective measure.

The owner theorized that the scanner was reporting false throttle-position readings because the car’s computer was actively disabling the engine.

Another possibility: a failing alternator. Electrical gremlins can mimic sensor failures on these early-2000s Mercedes models, as voltage irregularities confuse the engine control unit.

For now, the owner is weighing whether to replace the pump or test the alternator. He’s hoping someone with firsthand experience can point him in the right direction before he throws more parts at the problem.

If you’ve wrestled with this exact issue—ESP warning, limp mode, and a stubborn P0410—your insight could save a fellow mechanic a lot of time and money.
