A $150K Mercedes with a Rattle That Won’t Quit: One Owner’s Frustration

A longtime Mercedes-Benz loyalist, someone who has driven nothing but S-Classes and SLs for four decades, is at his wit’s end. After spending $150,000 on a new car, he’s been battling a persistent rattle over rough road patches. The noise, which he describes as a maddening “rattllel,” has now required three separate service visits to Boca Raton-area dealers, and the problem is still not solved.
The first attempt focused on the right front passenger seat and head restraint. Technicians found both components to be “all ok,” and pressing on the head restraint while driving did not silence the noise. On the second visit, a service advisor sat in the back seat during a test drive and identified the right rear door as the culprit.
A panel was removed, felt padding and cushioning were applied, and the door was reassembled. The rattle persisted. The team even tried latching the right front seat belt and pulling it taut while driving, no help. The car still chatters over any irregular surface.
The owner notes that a third service visit is scheduled as soon as a loaner vehicle becomes available. His frustration is palpable: “Quality defects after three years and 30,000 miles on a $150K car? No wonder people lease. It’s not much better than a kitchen appliance. ” For a man who has trusted Mercedes-Benz for forty years, the gnashing of teeth is understandable.
