2027 Tundra and Sequoia: Same Look, Serious Off-Road Upgrades

2027 Tundra and Sequoia: Same Look, Serious Off-Road Upgrades

Toyota didn't overhaul the 2027 Tundra and Sequoia, but the pair now share the same front end, making the Sequoia more of a true Tundra wagon than before. The big news is a new Trailhunter trim for both vehicles, built for overlanding and rock crawling, while TRD Pro trims remain aimed at high-speed desert running.

The Trailhunter package adds a locking rear differential, crawl control, front recovery hooks, upgraded underbody protection, Old Man Emu suspension, trail tires, and bronze wheels. Both vehicles also now come standard with a 14-inch center screen and the latest Toyota infotainment and safety systems.

Toyota turned the media drive into a multi-day off-road adventure in Colorado and Utah, including rock crawling near Moab and high-speed desert runs with truck jumps. The journalist reported that both vehicles handled a massive banked dune turn without trouble, and the hybrid V6 provided plenty of power.

The jumps felt smooth, with suspensions absorbing impacts well, though the Sequoia felt notably wide on tighter trails.

On the road, both were comfortable enough for daily driving, but the writer noted that using them only around town would be a waste, given their off-road capabilities. The only complaint was that the exterior cameras could be sharper. The event included camping at elevation, and the vehicles handled extreme heat, one showing an external temperature of 128 degrees, without any issues.

The journalist also mentioned that the Tundra was more tail-happy in the sand, while the Sequoia felt more predictable, and that the smaller 4Runner TRD Pro was preferred for its size and weight. No major mechanical changes were reported compared to the previous models, aside from the new Trailhunter trims and standard tech updates.
