2027 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid: A Practical, Fuel-Sipping Small SUV

The 2027 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid brings the familiar Corolla values, affordability and efficiency, into a small SUV package. 0-liter four-cylinder engine with three electric motors for a total of 196 horsepower. That setup makes it quicker than the nonhybrid version, though acceleration remains modest.

Fuel economy is a strong point, with EPA ratings of 46 mpg city, 39 mpg highway, and 42 mpg combined. In Car and Driver's 75-mph highway test, the hybrid returned 36 mpg, beating the nonhybrid's 30 mpg. The hybrid also feels more refined, with a less gruff engine note.

Inside, the cabin follows the Corolla sedan's basic, livable design, nothing flashy. Lower trims are plain, while the top XSE adds faux-leather upholstery, heated front seats, a sunroof, and ambient lighting. Rear space is adequate for two adults, but three across will be tight.

Cargo capacity is a key advantage: 22 cubic feet behind the second row, compared with 13 in the sedan and 18 in the hatchback. In testing, seven carry-on suitcases fit behind the rear seats, and 19 with them folded.

Standard tech includes an 8.0-inch touchscreen (10.5-inch optional), wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a six-speaker stereo (nine-speaker JBL optional). Safety features like automated emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and adaptive cruise control come standard on all trims.

The hybrid can tow up to 1,500 pounds. Warranty coverage includes three years or 36,000 miles limited, five years or 60,000 miles powertrain, ten years or 150,000 miles hybrid components, plus two years or 25,000 miles complimentary maintenance. 6 seconds and recorded 35 mpg observed.

The interior design feels dated and handling is bland, but for buyers prioritizing fuel economy and practicality, the Corolla Cross Hybrid delivers.
