2026 Volvo XC40 Review: A Small Luxury SUV That Feels Bigger Than It Is

2026 Volvo XC40 Review: A Small Luxury SUV That Feels Bigger Than It Is

The 2026 Volvo XC40 remains largely unchanged since its 2019 debut, and according to a recent review, that's not a bad thing. In a segment full of overly sporty or flashy rivals, the XC40 stands out as the low-key choice for buyers who want refinement without shouting about it.

The review notes the doors close with a solid thud, the high seating position puts you at eye level with larger SUVs, and the ride feels substantial for such a compact vehicle. The author calls the design chic and understated, urging shoppers not to dismiss it just because it's aging.

For 2026, changes are minimal: the base B4 front-wheel-drive model returns in Core and Plus trims, adaptive cruise control is now standard on Core and Plus, and the top Ultra trim gains a Black Edition with black exterior details. The Bright exterior theme has been dropped.

The test car was an all-wheel-drive B5 Ultra with a $550 climate package and $3,945 21-inch black wheels, bringing the total to $57,040 including destination. The reviewer suggests skipping the pricey wheels and recommends the B5 Core at $48,695, or the B4 for $3,400 less if you don't need AWD or extra power.

1 seconds. It feels quick in a straight line but isn't eager in corners, prioritizing comfort over sportiness. Volvo even removed Sport mode because owners rarely used it. The cabin is hushed at highway speeds, and the ride is taut yet composed. Pilot Assist adaptive cruise worked well in stop-and-go traffic.

1 cubic-foot trunk and supportive front seats. Thoughtful touches include carpet-lined door pockets, a crystal shifter, and large vertical vents. However, the 9-inch touchscreen feels dated, with a glitch where the Sirius XM icon kept closing and reappearing. 3-inch digital display offers limited customization, and there's no wireless phone mirroring, you must plug in for Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

The 360-degree camera was poorly stitched, and in-screen climate controls drew criticism. The Harman Kardon stereo sounded good but didn't get very loud.

Despite these flaws, the reviewer enjoyed the week with the XC40, calling it refreshingly honest. It doesn't try to be a sports car or off-roader, just a peppy, solid luxury crossover. The verdict: it's the right pick for someone who wants a subcompact that doesn't feel small, cheap, or overcomplicated.
