2026 Toyota RAV4 GR Sport: A Surprisingly Sporty Plug-In Hybrid SUV

Toyota's new RAV4 GR Sport takes the compact SUV in a racier direction, combining a plug-in hybrid powertrain with serious chassis upgrades. It's the only vehicle of its kind in the segment, offering 324 horsepower, no other mainstream compact SUV with an internal-combustion engine tops 300 horses.
6 inches lower than standard RAV4s, with stiffer springs, a reinforced rear-suspension crossmember, and retuned dampers and steering. Toyota offers summer tires for the 20-inch wheels, though the test car wore all-seasons. 83 g, better than the off-road-oriented RAV4 Woodland PHEV.
Despite the performance focus, the GR Sport delivered 42 mpg in a 75-mph highway fuel-economy test and traveled 38 miles on electric power. The wider stance, flared fenders, and two-tone paint add visual appeal, while the interior gets faux-suede, red accents, and GR logos. However, the cabin still uses lackluster plastic materials, and the as-tested price of $51,290 is steep for a RAV4.
Still, there's nothing else quite like this in the small-SUV class unless you step up to a luxury badge. It may be a bit silly, but we're glad it exists.
