2026 Subaru Outback: The Wagon That Finally Became an SUV

2026 Subaru Outback: The Wagon That Finally Became an SUV

For three decades, the Subaru Outback was the car that refused to pick a lane. Part wagon, part off-roader, it carved out a loyal following by blending family-friendly space with genuine dirt-road chops. But the 2026 model marks a major shift: after six generations, Subaru has finally given the Outback a full SUV makeover.

The familiar low-slung wagon shape is gone, replaced by a taller, more upright stance with even more ground clearance. The question is whether this new direction still serves the adventurers who made the Outback a legend.

Under the hood, Subaru isn’t chasing the hybrid wave just yet. 4-liter turbocharged version pushing 260 horsepower. Both pair with a CVT and standard all-wheel drive. 36 seconds, beating rivals like the Honda Pilot by more than a second. Fuel economy sits at 27 mpg combined for the base engine and 24 mpg for the turbo, respectable for a traditional gas engine, if not class-leading.

5 inches of ground clearance, Yokohama all-terrain tires, and revised X-Mode software that outpaces competitors from Toyota and Honda when the pavement ends.

Inside, the 2026 Outback gets a much-needed overhaul. 1-inch touchscreen runs faster and includes wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Google voice assistant. 6 cubic feet. Subaru’s latest EyeSight safety suite comes standard, featuring adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency steering, and hands-free driving support up to 85 mph.

The Outback earned a 2026 Top Safety Pick from IIHS. Pricing starts at $34,995 for the Premium trim, with the Wilderness model at $44,995. Compared to the 2025 model, the upgrades, especially the interior, make the extra cost worthwhile.
