2026 Subaru Outback review: Improved cabin and ride, but styling splits opinion

2026 Subaru Outback review: Improved cabin and ride, but styling splits opinion

The 2026 Subaru Outback enters a new chapter for the model, trading its familiar wagon silhouette for a taller, squarer, more SUV-like shape. While the design may not win beauty contests, the change brings real functional gains, according to a recent review.

The Outback, which started as a raised Legacy wagon in 1995 and became its own model by 2000, has long been a key seller for Subaru. The new version is available in six trim levels, all with standard all-wheel drive, priced from about $36,000 to just under $49,000, including destination.

The tested Limited trim came to $43,165. 8 inches higher and gets dedicated all-terrain tires.

The interior is a major step up. Extra height over the 2025 model means more passenger and cargo space, and the cabin quality approaches premium levels. Climate controls are back to physical knobs and buttons, a welcome change from the previous digital controls. The main complaint is the mesh fabric on the upper door panels and parts of the dashboard, which looks cheap and can stretch out of shape.

Overall, the review says the improved interior and refined drive make the looks easier to overlook.
