2001 Lexus RX300: A $4,600 Luxury SUV That Still Holds Its Own

2001 Lexus RX300: A $4,600 Luxury SUV That Still Holds Its Own

For more than two decades, the Lexus RX has been a hit among buyers who want a taste of luxury without the German price tag. This 2001 RX300, now offered at $4,600 in San Diego, shows exactly why the model earned its reputation. It’s a first-generation crossover that helped define the segment, built on a proven Toyota Camry platform, with Lexus-level fit and finish.

At this price, it’s a chance to own a piece of automotive history that still feels good on the road.

0-liter V6, good for 220 horsepower, paired with a four-speed automatic and on-demand all-wheel drive. The timing belt and water pump were replaced at 93,000 miles, a crucial maintenance item. Now showing 136,000 miles, the car runs and drives well, according to the seller. There are a few blemishes: nicks on the bumpers, some faded plastic under the hood, and balancing weights taped to the outside of the factory alloy wheels.

But the tires appear nearly new, and the Burnished Gold Metallic paint still shines.

Step inside, and the cabin retains that Lexus aura of quality. The tan leather shows some wear on the driver’s seat and a curious stain on the passenger seat, likely from rear-seat passengers grabbing it for support. Everything else, plastics, carpets, door panels, looks clean. Features include automatic climate control, power seats with memory, power mirrors and windows, and a cassette stereo with a small navigation screen (a rare option back then).

It’s definitely old-school, but the build quality holds up.

At $4,600, this RX300 is remarkably cheap for a vehicle that once commanded a premium. Of course, it’s a 25-year-old car, so you’re trading modern efficiency and safety for classic luxury and that Lexus reliability. The clean title and solid mechanicals make it a tempting daily driver with some extra style.

Is it worth it? That depends on how much you value the badge and the experience. For the right buyer, this could be a smart buy.
