1969 Subaru Sambar 360 Microvan Up for Auction on Bring a Trailer

1969 Subaru Sambar 360 Microvan Up for Auction on Bring a Trailer

S. debut with a tiny, quirky microcar, the 360 sedan, and this related van, the Sambar. A 1969 example of that rare microvan is now listed on Bring a Trailer, finished in a striking metallic lime green with a matching green-themed interior featuring cloth accents on vinyl seats.

Under ten feet long, the Sambar offers surprising cargo space in the back, though it's not meant for heavy loads, more like a whimsical choice for delivering helium balloons. Power comes from a rear-mounted, 356cc two-stroke, two-cylinder engine rated at just 25 horsepower, paired with a four-speed manual transmission sending power to the rear wheels.

The odometer shows around 32,000 miles, but true mileage is unknown.

S. are right-hand-drive imports, this Sambar is a left-hand-drive model, a rare exception. Its modest output helped keep road tax and insurance low in its home market. S. in 1968 through importer Malcom Bricklin, who brought over the 360 sedan for its fuel efficiency and regulatory advantages, and some Sambar vans followed.

The auction ends on August 13, offering a fun, novel collectible for enthusiasts.
